Hazel Echeveria before the glamour

Hazel Echeveria, 2nd Grade in 1923

The photos available on Hazel’s Find A Grave memorial page are far more glamorous than her 8 year old picture. But it’s par for the course for our 2nd grade class of Gonzales Grammar School. Hazel died relatively young according to her obituary, 58 years old, about 50 years after this photo was taken. Hazel is buried in Monterey county, CA not far from where her life started.

Hazel was born in San Benito county and lived in Gonzales in Monterey county in 1920 and 1930. Her family was large, 7 siblings in 1930 – the oldest Adeline wouldn’t survive 1931. Hazel was the third oldest child. Her father, Robert, was a day laborer. Which was better than in 1920 when no member of the household was working. These must have been lean years for the Echeveria family as it was for many.

The family has done an amazing job of documenting history and photos on the Find A Grave site. Take a look and you’ll see Hazel’s family in great detail!

  1. Your information on her parents is incorrect. She did not outlive her parents. What verification do you have confirming lack of employment.

  2. Hi Karen, you’re right on the parents. Thanks for the correction! Employment information comes from the census. Althought it can often be incorrect.
