Rowena and Sylvia

Rowena Clement (right) and Sylvia Fitzsimmons Hopkins (left)

I do love the poses of women together for some reason, probably the hair. These two ladies according to the back of the photo are Rowena Clement and Sylvia Hopkins. Thankfully the inscriber included Sylvia’s maiden name Fitzsimmons, which was incredibly helpful in finding her in the archives.

Sylvia Fitzsimmons (with various spellings) was born on October 29, 1878 in Texas to James S. Fitzsimons and Kate French – See death certificate. She married Frank E. Hopkins sometime between 1900-1910. Sylvia grew up in Gonzalez but moved to Kerr, Texas with her husband later. They did not appear to have any children. But several Fitzsimmons nieces and nephews lived with her and Frank throughout the early 1/2 of the century (also aiding in her identification.) Sylvia died on November 10, 1952.

I have not yet discovered who Rowena Clement is or how she is connected to Sylvia. They don’t appear to be siblings. But the research has just started so hopefully there will be more to add.

Annabelle

Annabelle Shuler, age 15 mos.

Update as of 9/14/12: All this photo has is a name and age, but it is so cute, I can’t help but keep searching. I think I may have found Annabelle. After a little research on the style of clothes and shoes I believe the picture to be taken in the 1920’s. The last name Shuler is not typical; it’s usually spelled Schuller. There is one Annabelle Shuler that keeps popping up. Luckily she has some yearbook photos from 1938 and 1942 online. While it’s never an easy comparison between a 15 month old and a 16 or 20 year old, it very reasonably looks like it could be the same person.

I believe this to be a picture of Annabelle Shuler, daughter of Dr. Ivan and Emma Shuler from Seattle, Washington. She married H E lovejoy in 1944 in Seattle. I have found other photos from Washington state in the batch I purchased from at the antique store, so not too far off that it would be from that part of the country.

If this is the right Annabelle, I’m not sure if she’s still alive or not, but I hope I can connect her with family.

Another Good

Forrest Good

With another look through the photos at my local antique store, I found a second Good. This is Forrest, possible relation to the earlier post of Louis Good. Then again, it’s possible that they are no relation at all. But I did a little research just to see what I could find.

Both pictures appear to be from about the same time period and both are from Ohio. Forrest’s picture is taken in Delphos, OH and Louis’ in Lima, OH. These two locations are only about 30 miles from one another – very close.

There were too many Louis Good’s to make any reasonable conclusions about who the man might be, but Forrest is a much less common name.

A search for Forrest Good reveals that the name is not as uncommon as I’d hoped. There are brothers Lewis and Forrest good, sons of Abraham and Luella Good living in Sugar Creek, OH in 1910. Forrest is born in 1895 and Lewis in 1902. No way to know for sure if these are the same brothers of course.

Forrest could also be the son of James and Mary Good from Miami, OH (slightly closer to Delphos). For now questions remain. Hopefully someone out there knows more!

Boy from Bemidji

Boy from Bemidji (MN?)

I don’t know who this little cutie is, but he was too adorable to pass up. Also, the picture is from Bemidji – I assume Minnesota – unless there’s another one I don’t know about. My husband had my engagement ring shipped to Bemidji before proposing so it’s kinda sentimental too ;)

Anabel Knight Powers

Anabel Knight Powers

“Anabel Knight Powers Circa 1917” is the label on the back of this picture frame. A little research revealed only one Anabel Knight Powers in public documents. She was born in Texas in 1888 to William Knight and wife. She married John/Jack P. Powers in 1907 in Oklahoma. She lived apparently the rest of her life in Oklahoma and died there (McIntosh county) in 1972, ten years after her husband died.

I haven’t found anyone searching for Anabel or her family yet, but I will keep looking. It’s an absolutely lovely photo and comes in a beautiful frame. The picture, by the way, was framed in Houston, TX.

The Evans Family

Evan R. Evans, G. W. Evans, Buzzard Evans

The Evans family, Father, son and wife. Picture from Lima, Ohio. They all look so much alike it’s almost scary!

Based on some brief research, I believe this is likely Evan R. Evans who married Hattie Bussert (hence the nickname Buzzard) in Allen, Ohio in 1895. Their son is Guy W. Evans, born in 1898 also in Allen, Ohio.

Interestingly, in the 1910 Allen, Ohio census, Guy Evans is living with his grandmother, Racheil Bussert (presumably Hattie’s mother).

The Mann Siblings

Vivian and Lloyd Mann

This is Vivian and Lloyd Mann. The picture, according to the photographer’s stamp on the frame, is from McGregor, Texas. Luckily with two names and a location the children were easy to find in the 1910 and 1920 census.

Vivian is the first child born to John Mann around 1908. She and her little brother Lloyd, who’s only 1 year younger, were both born in Texas. This picture was probably taken around 1911 or 1912 considering how young they are.

In the 1910 census a 22 year old John, his brothers and sisters, along with Vivian and Lloyd (babies) are living with John’s parents, Vivian and Lloyd’s grandparents. John is listed as a widow. By 1920 John appears to have remarried, to Myrtle, and has a 3rd child with the new wife, a Jennie Myrtle Mann. I’m curious what happened to Vivian and Lloyd’s mother.

Baby Richey

Lester Alan Richey

Not only do I love this baby face, I love the little outfit he has on. According to the back of the picture, this is baby Lester Alan Richey, aged 6 months and 17 days. But no date of course!

The style of the photograph and how it’s mounted suggests it was taken in the 1920’s or 30’s. That information was corroborated when I did a little research on D. Perry Evans Photographers from Portland, Oregon and found this:

D. Perry Evans, a leading photographer of Portland, conducting the Rose Studio in the Washington building and recognized as an artist of unquestioned skill, was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 18S0

(I think that should be 1880??)

Mr. Evans

took up the study of photography and there continued active along that line until 1907 when he came to the west, taking up his residence in Portland where he has since remained

This information comes from The History of Oregon, Vol. 2 by Charles Henry Carey.

I have not yet found other historical documents to back up this cutie pie’s pic – but when I do, I’ll be sure and post it!

Woman in Hat

Edith Rhienhardt Keifer

I just love this picture, what a hat! In researching Edith I looked for information on a woman whose maiden name was Keifer and a woman whose maiden name was Rhienhardt with a married name of Keifer. The later generated results. While it’s not definite, I’m fairly confident in saying that, based on the documents I’ve found, this is Edith P. Rhienhardt, born in Medina, Ohio in 1880. She married Honor S. Keifer on June 3, 1911 at the age of 30.

Louis Good

Louis Good

This is Mr. Louis Good. The picture was taken by Fenner in Lima, Ohio. While there are too many Louis Goods in Ohio to narrow down who this might be, I liked the picture too much to pass up.
