Georgia May of West Virginia

Georgia May, Class of 1940 Barboursville Jr. HS

Georgia May is quite a popular lady on ancestry. There are already LOTS of great pictures of her in online family trees. Hopefully, this will be one more to add to the photo books. I won’t go into too much detail as so much seems to already be known. Georgia was born in West Virginia in 1925 and lived with her family in Cabell County, West Virginia (where this class picture was taken) for her youth. She was the youngest child to E. C. and Mollie May with older siblings Susie, Steve, Doug, Frank, Ruth, and Clint. Her father was a fireman for the Railroad yard and sister Ruth worked in a bicycle factory in 1940. According to the many family trees, Georgia passed away in 2006. She was a 15 year old in the 1940 Jr. High class of Barboursville, West Virginia in this great picture.

The Kahler Boys Grown Up

Kahler brothers, Rush & Will, of Pennsylvania

We’ve met these men before, but they were much younger. This is Rush and Will Kahler, profiled with their parents in a previous post, Henry Kahler & Family. At the time of that family portrait the boys were about 2 and 5. These more recent pictures I found for sale from gretacarbo on eBay (Link to eBay auction). See the auction for more pictures and the back of the photos – some are fuzzy but readable.

In the above photo Rush is on the left and the middle and right are of Will. The middle one has “uncle Will Kahler” written on the back. I wonder who the owner of these photos is, maybe the seller knows. The pictures were taken in Pennsylvania, so apparently the boys still lived there. There were a LOT of online trees with the Kahler family so hopefully these photos will be a welcome addition.

Laura Mason Culp

Laura Mason Culp of Ohio

This is a wonderful picture of Laura Mason Culp, wife of William H. Culp and mother to 6 children that I could identify. I found this for sale at ebay (link to sale here). With so many children, I was surprised to find that no online trees had Laura represented in them. But I know this, one day a great-great grandchild of Laura’s will get the genealogy bug and they will be glad to have this photo!

The photograph, as you can see, was taken in West Jefferson, Ohio. Her name in full is written on the back. Laura was born in Ohio in 1854. I have not discovered who her parents were yet. She married William H. Culp on December 15, 1873 – there is a beautiful marriage license online. Over the next decade + she had at least 6 children from what I can tell: Elverson, Mason, Mary, Willard, Dittwell Earl, Sarah – not necessarily in that order. Laura died relatively young in 1892 and is buried in Silent Home Cemetery in Franklin County, Ohio. Her gravestone is online at FindAGrave.com.

Now to find those hidden genealogy buffs in the Culp family! Good luck Laura.

James Whelan

James Whelan #114

James Whelan, another Westbrook Academy student from 1925, was born in New York in 1908. His parents were Richard and Catherine/Katherine Whelan. The family lived in Olean, New York in 1910, 1920, and 1925 according to the census records. For some reason Mr. Whelan (Richard) didn’t live with the family in 1925, but appears in all other census. In 1930 they had moved to Buffalo. James had about 6 or 7 siblings – including a pair of twins on the end (named Mary & Joseph!)

Father Richard was from Ireland and worked as a machinist in a steel company. In 1930 James was a clerk in the steel industry as well. There are several James Whelan’s in NY in 1940 both born in 1908 one married to Elizabeth with 2 kids, working as an accountant, one married to Geraldine with no children – not sure which one is the right one, but I’m sure his family does.

Hope to reconnect James with some descendants!

Shuster & Bordeaux

Two more classmates from the 1924-24 Westbrook Commercial Academy in Olean, New York: these ladies are Mary Shuster #71 and Viola Bordeaux #56. Disappointingly, I was unable to find any information on Mary in the online records. Such a cute … Continue reading

Nellie Marquardt Gaskill

Nellie (Marquardt) Gaskill

This is Nellie. Her photograph was taken in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the back is written “Nellie Gaskill (Marquardt). For research purposes, Marquardt was assumed to be her maiden name. There are several Nellie Gaskill’s in the Fort Wayne, IN area – but only one with the maiden name Marquardt – and what a great name that is!

Nellie was born in Indiana about 1896. She married Ira C. Gaskill (his second wife) in February of 1918. Her parents were Jacob and Emma Barfeel Marquardt. The couple resided in Allen county (the same county as Fort Wayne) in the 1920 and 1940 census. They lived in Huntington, IN in 1930.

This is an absolutely beautiful picture. I found it on eBay and it can be purchased if anyone is interested – here’s the link.
